Destination Morocco Podcast

One of the great travel stories we’ve heard from a guest on the podcast was just over a year ago now. It was with Rachel Metcalfe, for whom Morocco went from being a remote, distant idea to, a month later, sitting on the airplane on her way to Casablanca.

Destination Morocco took on the challenge of organizing her last-minute trip, and in this episode Rachel explains how that made all the difference in having an enjoyable, complete tour that covered the sights she wanted to see.

This is our last episode of 2023, and many thanks to our listeners for a wonderful year of great episodes and great tours. In 2024, our new documentary, Kingdom of Colors, premiers, which follows Azdean's family’s trip around Morocco with some stunning visuals. You can see the trailer now on our website or the Destination Morocco YouTube channel.

Imagine: One day, someone gives you the idea of going to Morocco, and you think, "Yeah, maybe..." But then, a month later, spur of the moment, you buy a return ticket!

But you're not a big fan of planning, and the prospect of filling out the details of your impending trip are a little daunting, to say the least.

What do you do next?

This is Morocco on a Whim, Rachel Metcalfe's story of making the commitment and turning to Destination Morocco to create what became a very special and memorable trip.

Rachel starts off in Casablanca, and like many of our other guests meets Khalil, the blind tour guide of Hassan II Mosque. She tours around the north of Morocco, and falls in love with the picturesque, crossroads city of Tangier. Hear her wax poetic on its old world charm and beautiful setting between ocean and mountains. She is captivated by the blue city of Chefchaouen, leaving her Instagram page bursting with color.

Fès then takes center stage, with Rachel being guided through the labyrinth of streets, visiting the mosaic & tile factory and then dropping in on the famous tanneries, a crucial mint coming in very handy.

Her riad in Fès, so completely unassuming from the outside, turns out to be a veritable palace once you walk through the door. Rachel takes us on a tour and describes it in detail.

A highlight was the hammam, or "sand bath," in the desert at Agafay, just an hour outside of Marrakech. A relaxing and revitalizing experience, complete with herbs and spices for distinct aromas.

Rachel had her own private t

00:00:00.581 --> 00:00:03.270
If you're thinking about traveling to Europe.

00:00:03.270 --> 00:00:06.099
What I've told people I know is go to Morocco before you go to Europe.

00:00:06.099 --> 00:00:15.343
All of the different landscapes, the architecture you get some of the European feel in parts of Morocco, everywhere you look.

00:00:15.343 --> 00:00:16.469
It's just amazing.

00:00:21.160 --> 00:00:28.074
Welcome to the destination Morocco podcast, the show that takes you way to the beautiful country of Morocco.

00:00:28.074 --> 00:00:30.524
I am your host Azdean Elmoustaquim.

00:00:31.806 --> 00:00:46.033
In each episode we explore Moroccan culture, history, attractions and activities real and practical information coming from experienced travelers and native Moroccans like myself.

00:00:46.033 --> 00:00:48.685
And now let's go exploring.

00:00:48.685 --> 00:00:57.615
Welcome back to another episode of Destination Morocco podcast.

00:00:58.384 --> 00:01:14.853
One of the great travel stories We've heard from a guest on the podcast, just over a year ago now, was with Rachel Metcalfe, for whom Morocco went from being a remote, distant idea to, a month later, sitting on airplane on her way to Casablanca.

00:01:14.853 --> 00:01:21.953
The chance to grab a plane ticket, the time, the funds everything was quickly falling into place.

00:01:21.953 --> 00:01:33.513
But with this gear settling motion, rachel quickly realized that a comprehensive, worthwhile tour of Morocco was a big task to organize by herself.

00:01:33.513 --> 00:01:41.362
If this was to be a once in a lifetime trip, she wanted to make sure she did it right Now.

00:01:41.362 --> 00:02:03.912
Granted, we typically encourage our guests to book well ahead of time, many weeks at least, so that they have a better choice of accommodations, activities and prices, but when Rachel got in touch with us, we did our best to include as many of her interests and priorities as possible.

00:02:03.912 --> 00:02:15.054
Most of all, we made sure she had a good time and particularly like this episode for its attention on Tangier and the north of Morocco.

00:02:15.054 --> 00:02:27.572
Rachel spent some quality time there and although it's an extra drive further north from Chefchaouen and Fès, she'll go a long way to convince you need to add it to your itinerary.

00:02:27.572 --> 00:02:40.913
The lighthouse that you see in the cover art of this episode is actually the Cap Spartel lighthouse, which sits on cliff towering thousand feet above the straight of Gibraltar.

00:02:40.913 --> 00:02:46.673
When you stand there, you can really imagine being at the edge of the world.

00:02:46.673 --> 00:03:03.060
Rachel's episode had a lot of great detail about her riad in Fès and the colors of Chefchaouen, and she was also One of our guests who met Khalil the guide in Casablanca, who you have just heard on our last episode.

00:03:03.060 --> 00:03:16.073
This is a great episode to get you inspired for some Morocco travel in 2024, and I think there's a good chance that Rachel, too, will be going back before long.

00:03:17.580 --> 00:03:26.939
This is the last episode of 2023 and I wanted to thank the listeners for a wonderful year of great episodes and great tours.

00:03:26.939 --> 00:03:37.960
We covered a lot of ground this year, including getting our podcast studio set up in Marrakesh and the two months of live recording that I did this past summer.

00:03:37.960 --> 00:03:48.960
There'll be more of those coming up in the new year, as well as a new documentary, Kingdom of Colors, which follows my family's trip around Morocco with some stunning visuals.

00:03:48.960 --> 00:03:56.919
You can see the trailer now on our website or at Destination Morocco YouTube channel.

00:03:56.919 --> 00:04:02.939
Speaking of the website, it is now a comprehensive home for the podcast.

00:04:02.939 --> 00:04:05.828
We have moved everything in house.

00:04:05.828 --> 00:04:24.959
You will find lots more info about the podcast and the team behind it, individual pages for each episode, complete with all the links and resources, featured episodes, our monthly live Q&A replays and a section where you can request to be a guest yourself.

00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:32.959
If you have been to Morocco and would love to share your insight and perspective, we would love to have you as a guest on the show.

00:04:36.009 --> 00:04:38.959
And lastly, we continue to roll out new small group tours for 2024.

00:04:38.959 --> 00:04:46.839
These tours give you the intimate feel and flexibility of a private tour like Rachel's, at an affordable price.

00:04:46.839 --> 00:04:53.959
It opens up our tours to even more people to experience the charm and unique character of Morocco.

They start in April 2024 and then the rest of the year.

00:05:20.913 --> 00:05:25.959
And now it's over to Rachel to take us away to Tangier and beyond.

00:05:25.959 --> 00:05:29.959
Welcome to the Destinations Morocco podcast.

00:05:29.959 --> 00:05:31.711
In today's episode we have Rachel Metcalf.

00:05:31.711 --> 00:05:38.959
She visited Morocco late September and she's here today to share her experience with us.

00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:41.632
Rachel, welcome to our podcast.

00:05:41.632 --> 00:05:42.939
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

00:05:44.403 --> 00:06:00.959
Well, I am 36 years old, single, live in Dallas and decided that I was going to travel internationally this year, whether it was alone or with others, and hence my Morocco trip solo.

00:06:02.500 --> 00:06:06.384
And how did you decide about Morocco and why Morocco specifically?

00:06:07.165 --> 00:06:10.014
Morocco was kind of random.

00:06:10.014 --> 00:06:22.987
It came about when I was on a trip to see a friend in LA earlier this year and I was just talking about how much and how important it was to me to get out and travel this year.

00:06:22.987 --> 00:06:31.788
I was talking about Morocco in reference to a couple tile vendors that I work with and he was like just go to Morocco.

00:06:31.788 --> 00:06:33.630
I was like yeah, yeah.

00:06:33.630 --> 00:06:37.074
And then maybe a month later I spoke to the ticket.

00:06:37.074 --> 00:06:38.529
I had nothing planned.

00:06:38.529 --> 00:06:41.773
I called him like guess what I did today?

00:06:42.507 --> 00:06:45.670
And he was like no way, so that's how it started.

00:06:46.064 --> 00:06:46.968
You're very brave.

00:06:46.968 --> 00:06:51.216
Did you do any homework prior to deciding and getting the ticket?

00:06:51.216 --> 00:06:52.971
You just bought the ticket and say you know what?

00:06:52.971 --> 00:06:58.750
It's time for me now to gather some information and see what I'm going to go, what I'm going to stay, what I'm going to do and all that type of stuff.

00:06:58.750 --> 00:07:01.011
How was that process for you, rachel?

00:07:01.865 --> 00:07:03.992
There was no preparation.

00:07:03.992 --> 00:07:14.773
I bought the ticket and then kind of started freaking out about how I was going to make the trip happen and what I was going to be doing while I was there.

00:07:14.773 --> 00:07:24.752
I don't really enjoy planning either, so there was just a couple months of minor freakouts where I was like oh my goodness.

00:07:24.752 --> 00:07:30.192
I'm booked and I really want this to happen and I don't know how it's going to.

00:07:30.653 --> 00:07:31.194
Oh, my god.

00:07:31.194 --> 00:07:43.567
Ok, you know, just to give you an idea, for me and my family when we plan to go to Morocco just as a family, not a vacation trip well, it is vacation, but we take at least between nine months to a year to prepare.

00:07:43.567 --> 00:07:47.074
So in your case, you just, my goodness.

00:07:47.345 --> 00:07:51.295
Well, luckily I did book the ticket at least.

00:07:51.295 --> 00:07:54.593
I think it was probably four to five months ahead of time.

00:07:55.055 --> 00:07:55.536
Oh, I see.

00:07:55.884 --> 00:08:13.189
So after I booked the ticket and kind of realized like I don't know anything about Morocco and I don't enjoy researching and planning, I thought, ok, well, my research will be a podcast, and I listened to a lot of podcasts, so it was not a big deal.

00:08:13.189 --> 00:08:23.612
Searched, it, came across yours, started listening to it, and then, as the trip was getting closer, I thought I've got to find somebody to do this for me.

00:08:23.612 --> 00:08:25.709
I don't know how to do it, I don't want to do it.

00:08:25.709 --> 00:08:27.591
I have to find somebody to do this for me.

00:08:27.591 --> 00:08:29.451
And so that's when I reached out to you.

00:08:30.345 --> 00:08:36.110
Well, I'm very glad you have reached out to us and it's really have been a pleasure and a delight to work with you.

00:08:36.110 --> 00:08:39.735
We enjoyed creating your itinerary.

00:08:39.735 --> 00:08:42.572
It was a lot of fun for me and Sam when we created it.

00:08:42.572 --> 00:08:51.513
Every time when we do an itinerary it really feels for me personal because I put the last touches into it and I hope you were happy with the itinerary.

00:08:52.004 --> 00:08:54.092
Yes, I love the itinerary.

00:08:54.092 --> 00:08:56.953
I love all the places that we went.

00:08:56.953 --> 00:09:07.969
We really covered a lot in the seven days that I was there, so that was nice, even with the itinerary, I'm a little more laid back, so when you send it to me.

00:09:07.969 --> 00:09:10.089
I was like this looks good, Okay, here we go.

00:09:10.089 --> 00:09:15.572
But luckily it turned out perfect, Like I could not have asked for a better trip.

00:09:15.572 --> 00:09:21.057
So I'm thoroughly pleased and have recommended you all to anybody who asked.

00:09:21.164 --> 00:09:22.571
Thank you, thank you.

00:09:22.571 --> 00:09:24.993
We really appreciate that, rachel.

00:09:24.993 --> 00:09:34.528
We absolutely appreciate it, and I know that you had some concerns before you traveled to Morocco, and I know your parents as well, so that's why I said, hey, you know they, you give them myself.

00:09:34.528 --> 00:09:38.385
I mean, I'll talk to them, I'll stay in touch with them, just in case For me.

00:09:38.385 --> 00:09:42.828
I'd like to stay right there, but I'm also invisible, so just behind the scene.

00:09:42.828 --> 00:09:54.126
I check on you every day and you know we have that little group, so in terms of communication, I think that really adds quite a bit of value, just for us to be on the same page, just in case something happened or something.

00:09:54.126 --> 00:09:55.552
We're aware of it right away.

00:09:55.552 --> 00:10:01.967
Your perception of Morocco before you got to Morocco, when you got to Morocco and throughout your trip how was it?

00:10:02.865 --> 00:10:12.753
Prior to going to Morocco, as I've probably made pretty clear, I didn't have a huge perception or even really frame of reference.

00:10:12.753 --> 00:10:24.892
I work with a couple of tile companies there, so I had some idea of like aesthetic lease, what it might be like, but honestly, when I got there, it was so much more and just blew my mind.

00:10:24.892 --> 00:10:31.514
Everywhere you look there's something beautiful and handcrafted and just so intricate.

00:10:31.514 --> 00:10:43.549
The entire trip was aesthetically pleasing and amazing, and then ahead of time too, I think, with like going back to what you were saying about staying in contact and making yourself available.

00:10:43.549 --> 00:10:52.511
For me, that was really invaluable, especially for a female solo traveler who is going to a place that they know relatively nothing about.

00:10:52.664 --> 00:10:53.750
Yeah, absolutely.

00:10:54.264 --> 00:11:04.135
I was nervous about what that would be like, how safe it would be or whatnot, and when I got there it was totally fine.

00:11:04.135 --> 00:11:08.389
Everybody was minding their business, doing their own thing and relaxed and it wasn't an issue.

00:11:08.389 --> 00:11:15.692
So I think I thought it was gonna be more like when you're on the beaches in Cancun and people are approaching you and won't leave you alone.

00:11:15.692 --> 00:11:19.330
And when I didn't experience any of that and I felt safe.

00:11:19.705 --> 00:11:19.966
Oh that's.

00:11:19.966 --> 00:11:21.010
I'm so glad to hear that.

00:11:21.010 --> 00:11:29.495
So the way that you have traveled, rachel, when you said you wanted to travel by yourself, we have never had a solo person travel by themselves.

00:11:29.495 --> 00:11:38.951
So this is a very unique experience, the one that you have done with us, because you're a solo female traveler, but you did not do it in a group like in previous episodes.

00:11:38.951 --> 00:11:53.629
You did not do it with other friends, it was just you, and I think the way that you have done it, in my personal opinion, is the best way to do it in many different ways, because we do save you a lot of time and we do save you a lot of money.

00:11:54.245 --> 00:11:55.309
You know a lot of money in terms.

00:11:55.309 --> 00:11:56.831
Nobody's gonna take advantage of you.

00:11:56.831 --> 00:12:00.210
You're not gonna overpay for any of the things that you see or buy your shop.

00:12:00.210 --> 00:12:05.371
When you look at your itinerary, get to do a lot of things that you would not be able to do on your own.

00:12:05.371 --> 00:12:09.629
If yours was seven days, somebody could have gone with the same itinerary.

00:12:09.629 --> 00:12:12.090
It'll take maybe three weeks, maybe four weeks to get that.

00:12:12.205 --> 00:12:25.292
So we understand you're very busy and you have a lot of things to do and take care of and you also have limited time to be in Morocco, so we try to maximize on everything in terms of the activities, in terms of things to do.

00:12:25.292 --> 00:12:27.994
Even when you have a half day, there's nothing to do.

00:12:27.994 --> 00:12:31.870
We filled it for you because we want you to experience even more of Morocco.

00:12:31.870 --> 00:12:40.014
That's what I would recommend for female travel to do it with a tour guide, with a tour leader, with the whole package, everything it's fully loaded.

00:12:40.565 --> 00:12:47.591
In each city, you get your local guides in, you have your tour leader with you throughout, when they pick you up from the airport, all the way until they drop you off at the airport.

00:12:47.591 --> 00:12:53.471
You have your car, you have your driver with you 24 seven, all the entrances, anybody wanna go.

00:12:53.471 --> 00:12:55.750
It's already prepaid, so you don't have to get in line.

00:12:55.750 --> 00:12:56.346
You don't have to.

00:12:56.346 --> 00:13:19.749
Nothing comes out of your pocket, except if you wanna buy some stuff for yourself, family or gifts, your lunch that's the only thing that it's not included and also what we try to do in terms of experience, since your breakfast and dinner is included, we don't like to have you have dinner at riyals or hotels most of the time, unless we don't have a choice for the desert, for example, aitbin, haddoor, some other places.

00:13:19.749 --> 00:13:29.256
So how was that for you, rachel, in terms of the places that we have picked for you to stay and also the food and the variety of it?

00:13:30.120 --> 00:13:44.356
Well, first I would say that I do agree that if you're traveling solo I even personally feel like in a group doing it with a travel guide is a hundred and ten percent worth it in terms of not wasting time.

00:13:44.356 --> 00:13:50.027
You can cover so much more and there's just a more laid back feel when it's been worked out ahead of time.

00:13:50.027 --> 00:13:51.227
You can enjoy yourself.

00:13:51.227 --> 00:13:57.535
You're not trying to figure out where you are, what to do, working through like language barriers and all that kind of stuff.

00:13:57.740 --> 00:14:10.270
So it was worth every penny spent to have that service and ability to relax and really let somebody take care of the logistics and if there was an issue, work it out.

00:14:10.270 --> 00:14:21.159
I would never travel without that again, especially to somewhere where isn't maybe as westernized as other European countries.

00:14:21.159 --> 00:14:35.331
As far as the places that I stayed, I kind of understood what a Riyadh was and when we first started I had ideas of these fancy hotels and whatever.

00:14:35.331 --> 00:14:39.716
And I am so happy that you chose what I was doing.

00:14:39.716 --> 00:14:45.546
You knew what you were doing and now, talking to other people, I'm like no, you want to stay at a Riyadh.

00:14:45.546 --> 00:14:49.009
Like they're amazing, they're beautiful, they're all different.

00:14:49.009 --> 00:14:50.432
It's the experience.

00:14:50.432 --> 00:14:53.056
If you don't do it that way, then you're not even doing it right.

00:14:53.520 --> 00:14:55.268
I agree, 100% yeah.

00:14:56.380 --> 00:14:59.683
And then in terms of the food, it was amazing.

00:14:59.683 --> 00:15:14.277
Some places, especially like Tanti, or had a very Mediterranean style food, which is my preference anyways, and so that was even better, and I love the different flavors that they use that they don't do here in the States.

00:15:14.277 --> 00:15:17.663
I mean, you know, the sweet and the savory kind of in one.

00:15:17.663 --> 00:15:25.470
And then one of my favorite things is all the small tapas, or like little salads, that they bring out ahead of time.

00:15:25.470 --> 00:15:26.990
That could have just been my meal.

00:15:26.990 --> 00:15:33.115
All 12 of these little plates are mine, so I love the places that you chose for me.

00:15:33.476 --> 00:15:33.917
Thank you.

00:15:34.320 --> 00:15:39.692
I don't recall eating really often in the Riyadh, except for breakfast.

00:15:40.801 --> 00:15:44.264
That's the whole point, because we wanted to experience that local cuisine.

00:15:44.264 --> 00:15:51.673
Because when you travel you stay at hotels all the time, so you know you get used to the same food at the hotel anywhere you go.

00:15:51.673 --> 00:15:53.056
It's almost predictable.

00:15:53.056 --> 00:15:57.245
But then when we do it outside, just like you said, fast is different.

00:15:57.245 --> 00:16:00.207
I felt the same way when I went to Fast and they gave me these 12.

00:16:00.207 --> 00:16:01.208
I counted them, they would.

00:16:01.208 --> 00:16:02.390
In my case they were 11.

00:16:02.390 --> 00:16:05.594
And I was like how am I going to eat my Tajin if I go through all of this?

00:16:05.594 --> 00:16:09.202
I mean, it's just a lot of food, but it was an amazing experience.

00:16:09.202 --> 00:16:16.914
So that is the goal is for you and the guests to experience the local cuisine, the local culture, because every city is different.

00:16:16.914 --> 00:16:21.402
I know you'll love Tanjiri was one of your favorite cities to stay and I totally agree.

00:16:21.402 --> 00:16:26.192
Tanjiri has developed in the last two decades the most, in my opinion, in Morocco.

00:16:27.321 --> 00:16:30.303
It was just perfect, picturesque.

00:16:30.303 --> 00:16:31.225
I loved it.

00:16:31.225 --> 00:16:36.929
It had some European influences for sure, architecturally and it was clean.

00:16:36.929 --> 00:16:38.672
That had the old world feel.

00:16:38.672 --> 00:16:42.855
And then, being on the ocean, it just in my mind.

00:16:42.855 --> 00:16:44.177
I can just see myself there.

00:16:44.177 --> 00:16:47.325
It was everything that I want in life.

00:16:47.325 --> 00:16:50.330
So that's how I feel about Tanjiri.

00:16:50.330 --> 00:16:52.813
And then the food took it to a whole other level.

00:16:52.813 --> 00:16:56.807
Yeah, so it's just really beautiful.

00:16:56.807 --> 00:17:03.279
And then you know, obviously, having the breeze and then the mountains in the background, I mean there's not much more you could ask for, in my opinion.

00:17:04.000 --> 00:17:05.563
And also you went in September.

00:17:05.563 --> 00:17:09.630
September is the weather is not really that hot, but it can be still.

00:17:09.630 --> 00:17:11.092
But how was it for you?

00:17:11.092 --> 00:17:13.836
I know it varies from the mountains, from city to city.

00:17:13.836 --> 00:17:16.299
How was the weather for you throughout your tour?

00:17:17.161 --> 00:17:18.804
It was really nice.

00:17:18.804 --> 00:17:22.248
Pretty much the whole time there was no rain, so that was never an issue.

00:17:22.248 --> 00:17:24.811
It was sunny and it wasn't hot.

00:17:24.811 --> 00:17:29.198
It was, I think, maybe 65 degrees, probably on average most of the time.

00:17:29.298 --> 00:17:30.299
So oh nice.

00:17:30.922 --> 00:17:37.259
You bring a jacket, you have it on part of the day or not, so I don't know if it's like that all the time, but it was pretty perfect.

00:17:38.281 --> 00:17:38.662
Excellent.

00:17:38.662 --> 00:17:43.230
So how was the Moroccan culture for you and the Moroccan hospitality?

00:17:43.230 --> 00:17:45.654
As an American, how did you feel as a tourist?

00:17:45.654 --> 00:17:48.299
How did you feel as a guest in a foreigner country?

00:17:49.461 --> 00:18:12.667
The culture was again like I didn't really have any perceptions or expectations really, but it was definitely more conservative in general speaking, which and I'm just talking about from the way people dress and act outside in public and you know, it's not maybe like America, where it's a little louder and rowdier and in your face.

00:18:12.667 --> 00:18:26.646
So that was really nice Everybody, you know, relaxing and being polite and in some of the busier places it was crazy how there are people everywhere and it almost had like a New York feel.

00:18:26.646 --> 00:18:28.930
But again, I had my guide.

00:18:28.930 --> 00:18:35.320
I didn't really feel overwhelmed because he knew where he was going and so I just followed the whole time.

00:18:35.320 --> 00:18:37.144
I felt pretty safe.

00:18:37.144 --> 00:18:40.688
I think had I been there by myself I would have been just as safe.

00:18:40.688 --> 00:18:42.810
Without a guide I would have been just as safe.

00:18:42.810 --> 00:18:44.573
I just probably would have gotten lost.

00:18:44.573 --> 00:18:50.240
And then I then I don't know how safe I would have been, but I didn't ever feel like in danger at all.

00:18:50.621 --> 00:18:51.484
Okay, that's glad to hear.

00:18:51.484 --> 00:19:03.093
Yeah, what type of advice would you give somebody who's trying to go to Morocco and they're in the process right now of gathering the information, doing everything online, then listening to podcasts?

00:19:03.093 --> 00:19:04.776
What would you tell them?

00:19:05.599 --> 00:19:13.170
I would tell them to call you and just let you handle it and then go and relax and enjoy.

00:19:13.170 --> 00:19:16.955
I mean if there's certain spots they want to see that can be worked in.

00:19:16.955 --> 00:19:28.013
Each place is so different and some are very robust, and going on and like Fez, there's no way you can navigate Fez in a timely manner without a guide.

00:19:28.013 --> 00:19:29.256
It would be impossible.

00:19:29.540 --> 00:19:30.865
I agree, absolutely yeah.

00:19:31.299 --> 00:19:42.971
If you're not going to use a travel agency and a tour guide and local guides, I think you're going to end up not getting the most out of your money and you're not going to really be able to enjoy yourself as much.

00:19:42.971 --> 00:19:50.279
So I would say research the places that you want to go, because unless you have unlimited time, you probably can't do everything.

00:19:50.279 --> 00:20:04.299
But then, beyond that, let somebody else take care of the logistics and you have more time to really take in each of the places and pay attention to the details and enjoy all the nuances and things that make each place special.

00:20:05.221 --> 00:20:05.762
Absolutely.

00:20:05.762 --> 00:20:10.634
What was your best moment or your biggest surprise when it came to Morocco?

00:20:11.496 --> 00:20:15.464
My biggest surprise was the desert Marrakesh.

00:20:16.066 --> 00:20:22.602
Oh, agafa, yes, oh my god, yes, I've seen the pictures, I've seen the videos when you put on a Moroccan outfit.

00:20:22.843 --> 00:20:23.885
Yes, that was fun.

00:20:24.396 --> 00:20:28.654
You look completely different, you completely transform and it was a lot of fun.

00:20:28.654 --> 00:20:32.144
So everybody was caring to you and I love the experience.

00:20:32.144 --> 00:20:35.634
And the thing is, agafa is not really that far from Marrakesh.

00:20:35.634 --> 00:20:38.154
You know you can go, you know it's about an hour away.

00:20:38.154 --> 00:20:41.226
You can go have a really good dinner, romantic, nice.

00:20:41.226 --> 00:20:43.738
Then come back to your yard in Marrakesh.

00:20:43.917 --> 00:20:54.262
Yeah, it was amazing and beautiful to see and then where we went, how the restaurant was Right there on the edge and the stars and nice.

00:20:54.462 --> 00:20:56.788
I was surprised for a couple reasons.

00:20:56.788 --> 00:21:18.300
I was not planning to get on a camel and it worked out like when there was a camel there, it's like, okay, I guess we're doing that and it was awesome, and so many people, so many of my friends and family, just couldn't believe it and we're so excited and they're like, oh my gosh, I want to do that and what do you even?

00:21:18.300 --> 00:21:34.202
I feel more surprising is when I come back to Morocco, I actually now do have this interest of staying in the desert and Doing that tour experience, which, for me, I just didn't really think was in my interest After being there it is.

00:21:34.202 --> 00:21:37.826
The other thing that I really liked was the hemorrhage.

00:21:38.207 --> 00:21:40.734
Oh my god, yes, yes, tell us about that, please.

00:21:42.018 --> 00:21:43.279
I could do that every day.

00:21:43.279 --> 00:21:44.383
It's so amazing.

00:21:44.643 --> 00:21:46.887
The herbs, the smell, the aroma.

00:21:46.887 --> 00:21:49.844
Oh you know the pampering, wow, yes.

00:21:51.756 --> 00:21:55.429
Even I mean we couldn't really understand each other, but I didn't care.

00:21:55.429 --> 00:21:57.154
I was like, just do whatever you want to me.

00:21:57.154 --> 00:21:58.338
This is amazing.

00:21:58.338 --> 00:22:00.384
It felt great, it was very relaxing.

00:22:00.384 --> 00:22:03.515
If I lived there, I would do this at least twice a week.

00:22:03.515 --> 00:22:07.928
I mean it's really relaxing and just a different experience.

00:22:07.928 --> 00:22:17.436
It's crazy being in those marble rooms with the big tub of water running and just washing the hair and everything it was it's incredible, great experience.

00:22:17.477 --> 00:22:22.696
You know, and also, when you're traveling, a lot of people don't pay attention that you actually do a lot of Driving.

00:22:22.696 --> 00:22:29.535
And when you do a lot of driving, you sit in on the car for hours and hours and you know, with time it gets to you, you really do get tired.

00:22:29.535 --> 00:22:33.321
So you do need that half a day just to unwind, just to relax.

00:22:33.321 --> 00:22:36.969
I always recommend at least one time to do a spa.

00:22:38.415 --> 00:22:51.674
And that's another thing, something that, as a solo traveler, it was nice to be able to rearrange or move things around with the schedule, because I wasn't with a Group or especially a big group.

00:22:51.674 --> 00:23:08.898
So if I wanted to get started at 11 instead of 9, I could do that, and when we were at a place that may be like, okay, I saw, I'm interested, I'm ready to go, I didn't have to wait for 10 people to ask questions and whatever, because I was traveling alone.

00:23:08.898 --> 00:23:13.106
I could say you know, skip that, I can Google that and.

00:23:13.186 --> 00:23:14.549
I want to say it's a challenge.

00:23:15.635 --> 00:23:17.142
That's the advantage that you have.

00:23:17.142 --> 00:23:20.726
It is your itinerary and you control it 100%.

00:23:20.726 --> 00:23:22.039
Whatever you say goes.

00:23:22.039 --> 00:23:27.041
If a city doesn't make a sense, if a sightseeing or an area does not make sense, you can always change it.

00:23:27.041 --> 00:23:31.775
Even though everything is already confirmed, you don't need to get in touch with me, you can do it on the spot.

00:23:31.775 --> 00:23:37.355
The tour leaders we have that incredibly, do an amazing job, and you had Elias is one of the best ones that we have.

00:23:37.355 --> 00:23:38.799
We're very grateful for him.

00:23:38.799 --> 00:23:41.288
Everybody has ownership to do the right thing.

00:23:41.288 --> 00:23:48.194
There's no, oh, let me check, let me call Sam, let me call this and time difference, and all know we make the changes on the spot.

00:23:48.194 --> 00:23:52.152
We want you to experience exactly Morocco the way that he want to experience it.

00:23:52.634 --> 00:23:54.775
Yes, he was an amazing tour leader.

00:23:54.775 --> 00:24:05.162
He was very knowledgeable about everything, but also very friendly and outgoing and making fun, and anything that I needed he was very efficient at making happen.

00:24:05.162 --> 00:24:07.366
It wasn't really ever an issue.

00:24:07.366 --> 00:24:11.384
I told him what I wanted and it happened, which is also invaluable.

00:24:11.484 --> 00:24:12.907
Oh, I totally agree.

00:24:12.907 --> 00:24:19.967
So when you went to Morocco I know you did your itinerary, I can see it you did Casa Blanca, robot asela, which is a small city.

00:24:19.967 --> 00:24:22.154
It's a Portuguese small coastal city.

00:24:22.154 --> 00:24:25.705
Then you went to Tangier and then you did shift showing, then fast.

00:24:25.705 --> 00:24:31.627
Then you went through the back roads through the name of the Marrakech and you stayed a couple of days in Marrakech.

00:24:31.627 --> 00:24:34.883
Can you tell us about your experience in this route?

00:24:34.883 --> 00:24:39.664
I know in Casa Blanca you had a very special tour guide that did the mask visit for you.

00:24:39.664 --> 00:24:45.894
His name is Khalil and I've spoken about him earlier in previous episodes and I talked to him from time to time.

00:24:45.894 --> 00:24:47.819
He's an amazing, amazing gentleman.

00:24:47.819 --> 00:24:52.198
Can you tell us what was your experience with him in Casa Blanca, please, rachel?

00:24:52.941 --> 00:24:55.570
He's just a special person in general, I think.

00:24:55.570 --> 00:24:56.775
I mean, I don't know.

00:24:56.775 --> 00:24:58.980
I'm sure you've mentioned that he's blind.

00:24:59.000 --> 00:25:04.742
Yes so he knows this place by heart and Was very knowledgeable.

00:25:04.742 --> 00:25:21.894
And again, it was just me and him, so I got to ask the questions and while we're walking around, getting in and out of places as we want to, there was another group of like 20 people, you know, having to walk around together, and so he was very knowledgeable.

00:25:21.894 --> 00:25:33.089
I mean it was impressive that you know he was blind and could still feel his way around and know what he was showing you and Speaking to it, and I mean that must was amazing.

00:25:33.089 --> 00:25:44.199
The craftsmanship you can't even really describe it like you have to see it because it's truly unbelievable the ceilings everywhere, the doors, the ceilings, the arches Architecturally it's an amazing.

00:25:44.199 --> 00:25:45.542
Morocco is an amazing place.

00:25:45.564 --> 00:25:46.085
Thank you, thank you.

00:25:46.936 --> 00:25:52.211
I was telling somebody recently about the backdrop between all of the cities.

00:25:52.211 --> 00:25:53.755
It's just as amazing.

00:25:53.755 --> 00:26:05.342
So I mean, yeah, you might be sitting in the car for three, four, five hours, but it's truly visually Always changing and always beautiful to see.

00:26:05.342 --> 00:26:08.909
There was never a time where I wasn't impressed by what I was seeing.

00:26:09.557 --> 00:26:10.761
Wow, that's incredible.

00:26:10.761 --> 00:26:16.440
Tell us about your experience in fast and also the real that you have stayed in fast.

00:26:17.181 --> 00:26:18.044
The riyads are.

00:26:18.044 --> 00:26:20.089
You just have to see them in person.

00:26:20.089 --> 00:26:26.893
It's like a three-story courtyard, almost with open air at the top, and all are in it.

00:26:26.893 --> 00:26:35.294
The woodwork on everything, the tile, every single inch of these places is handmade, artisanal.

00:26:35.840 --> 00:26:38.189
Yeah, the craftsmanship is just, it's amazing.

00:26:38.189 --> 00:26:41.229
Now I've been to first and it's very tricky.

00:26:41.229 --> 00:26:46.384
So when you look at, when you see the riyad from outside, do you expect it to be the same from the inside?

00:26:47.844 --> 00:26:58.503
No, no, it looks like a door on a length echo wall and then you go in and it's like a little bit of a maze and then it opens up to this amazing three-story area.

00:26:59.220 --> 00:27:07.202
It was a shock for me, to be honest with you, because at that time, when those riyads were built, the people did not want to show off what they have.

00:27:07.202 --> 00:27:12.570
So, yeah, you look at, it's just a wall, maybe, with no windows or nothing.

00:27:12.570 --> 00:27:24.846
But then when you go inside the house, it's just like wow, mind-blowing the mosaic, like you said, the Jaliz, the Moroccan Jaliz, the water fountain inside the palm trees or the banana trees.

00:27:24.846 --> 00:27:27.464
It's so soothing, it's an incredible experience.

00:27:28.420 --> 00:27:30.987
That was the most beautiful riyad, I will say.

00:27:30.987 --> 00:27:32.111
I agree with that.

00:27:32.111 --> 00:27:36.050
You just kind of forget that because they're all special in their own ways.

00:27:36.050 --> 00:27:47.672
Even some that are not as decorative still got the very like old world vibe that they've been there forever and maybe it was somebody who was maybe a little more humble or didn't have as much.

00:27:47.672 --> 00:27:52.411
They each have a special uniqueness and you can appreciate each one for what they are.

00:27:52.411 --> 00:27:56.864
The one in Fez was really impressive and you're right, it's totally different.

00:27:56.864 --> 00:28:00.388
When you walk in, you forget where you just were outside the door.

00:28:00.900 --> 00:28:04.025
Yes, for sure, it is one of the best riyads.

00:28:04.025 --> 00:28:08.709
We're very fortunate to be a part of their network and actually I did not know.

00:28:08.709 --> 00:28:15.307
I was talking to Sam earlier today and he was like that riyad was built back in the 17th century, so you can just you cannot really tell that it's that old.

00:28:15.307 --> 00:28:17.903
Everything inside of it is just like wow.

00:28:17.903 --> 00:28:20.990
I'm so glad that you got a chance to experience it.

00:28:21.900 --> 00:28:24.388
In Fez, we went to a restaurant, to.

00:28:24.388 --> 00:28:37.609
I believe it used to be a house for a family, and that one was amazing as well, and it was built in the 14th century, and the local guide was pointing out to me that it had the date inscribed and I could see it.

00:28:37.650 --> 00:28:37.849
Oh, wow.

00:28:38.740 --> 00:28:41.428
And I'm seeing how seriously that's regulated.

00:28:41.709 --> 00:28:41.930
Yes.

00:28:42.359 --> 00:28:45.828
And it's crazy that these places have withstood all this time.

00:28:46.289 --> 00:28:52.603
Yeah, that's why I always say, if you have one day to spend and visit Morocco, fez is definitely the city to visit.

00:28:52.603 --> 00:28:56.983
Because of that history, because of so many landmarks, it's just incredible.

00:28:56.983 --> 00:29:00.354
What did you get to see when you visited Fez in terms of?

00:29:00.354 --> 00:29:06.211
Did you get to see the King's Palace, the Jewish Quarter, the Mosaic in the making, the tenories?

00:29:06.880 --> 00:29:14.144
We did visit the Mosaic factory, which I was kind of familiar with anyways because, like I said, I work with that.

00:29:14.144 --> 00:29:21.046
But it's still impressive, especially if you've ever tried to make one of those pots on the wheels.

00:29:21.046 --> 00:29:21.788
It's not easy.

00:29:21.788 --> 00:29:24.666
I took a class and ended up making two ashtrays.

00:29:24.728 --> 00:29:25.108
Oh, my God.

00:29:26.602 --> 00:29:28.145
To see what they're making.

00:29:28.145 --> 00:29:29.108
It's incredible.

00:29:29.108 --> 00:29:31.045
That was impressive, for sure.

00:29:31.045 --> 00:29:39.413
And then we went to the tannery which was also incredible, to see how they were doing the process.

00:29:39.413 --> 00:29:42.945
It looks like how they probably were doing it hundreds of years ago.

00:29:43.386 --> 00:29:44.669
Yes, it did not change.

00:29:44.669 --> 00:29:46.071
You're absolutely right.

00:29:46.071 --> 00:29:46.313
Yes.

00:29:47.259 --> 00:29:49.386
Like the guy in there stomping on the hide.

00:29:49.949 --> 00:29:51.967
Yeah, and the colors, the different colors.

00:29:51.967 --> 00:29:57.886
They represent different part of the process, where they are at at that moment, so they move the hide from place to place.

00:29:57.886 --> 00:29:59.444
It's very intriguing and very nice.

00:29:59.444 --> 00:30:01.946
Was it smelly for you, rachel?

00:30:01.946 --> 00:30:05.489
Because a lot of people say yes, it was smelly and some say no.

00:30:05.489 --> 00:30:08.868
In my opinion, it was smelly for me, but how was it for you?

00:30:08.868 --> 00:30:09.490
Extremely.

00:30:09.811 --> 00:30:12.119
Extremely smelly, you know whatever.

00:30:12.119 --> 00:30:13.704
You get through it.

00:30:13.704 --> 00:30:24.305
But you don't get used to it, you just have to get through it and you use the mint and I'm usually feel like I can handle stuff like that or get used to it or get over it, but no, not there.

00:30:24.325 --> 00:30:25.599
Yeah, it was.

00:30:25.599 --> 00:30:26.683
In my case it was kind of strong.

00:30:26.683 --> 00:30:31.824
Yes, I took a lot of pictures, I took a lot of videos, so it was absolutely worth it.

00:30:32.546 --> 00:30:36.517
The other place we visited no, maybe this is in Marrakesh was the Bahia Palace.

00:30:36.786 --> 00:30:38.251
Oh, the Bahia Palace, yes, in Marrakesh.

00:30:38.251 --> 00:30:41.054
Yeah, that was actually your next stop after a couple of days.

00:30:41.054 --> 00:30:45.996
So how was Marrakesh for you, places you stayed in and the overall experience.

00:30:46.806 --> 00:31:04.719
The Medina was like wild Again, that feel of just like people everywhere, and this is one thing that I didn't realize, like how late people, including children, stay up in Morocco, and so it was like wild to see a four year old out on the street with their parents, but like at 11 or midnight, yeah.

00:31:04.719 --> 00:31:07.711
And so that area the square.

00:31:08.010 --> 00:31:10.576
A lot of people call it the square or Jamal Fina square.

00:31:10.938 --> 00:31:21.615
Okay, it was super interesting to see because it was a good chaos, but there was stuff and people everywhere and I mean the driving was a little crazy.

00:31:22.586 --> 00:31:40.951
I don't know that people use lanes in that area, no, and then you know all the motorcycles and you know a two lane in Marrakesh, it's really five lane, and you add a little bit of bicycles, motorcycles, a little bit of horses, a little bit of donkeys, and that's the regular traffic in Marrakesh.

00:31:41.244 --> 00:31:49.569
It's frightening for not me because I was in a vehicle, but like the other people I'm like are you not concerned you might get hit by a bus?

00:31:49.569 --> 00:31:51.853
You know that's different than here in the US.

00:31:52.346 --> 00:31:55.010
Oh, absolutely, yes, no comparison, definitely.

00:31:55.010 --> 00:32:07.140
Now, one of the questions that I have, rachel, please, do you have any tips or hacks that you would tell a solo traveler or a female traveler go into Morocco, in terms of the best way to explore Morocco?

00:32:07.140 --> 00:32:12.636
Your experience is unique in this regard and I would like for you, if you would please share it with the audience.

00:32:13.305 --> 00:32:15.833
I would say plan ahead, spend the money.

00:32:15.833 --> 00:32:17.609
It's well worth it.

00:32:17.609 --> 00:32:19.952
You're going to get a better experience.

00:32:19.952 --> 00:32:22.893
This could be a once in a lifetime thing for somebody.

00:32:23.253 --> 00:32:23.734
Absolutely.

00:32:24.144 --> 00:32:34.038
So do it right, plan ahead, be prepared to maybe spend a little more and have the opportunity to experience these things while being relaxed.

00:32:34.038 --> 00:32:39.516
And for females, that would be my advice for a solo traveler or a group of travelers.

00:32:39.516 --> 00:32:48.098
You're going to waste so much time trying to figure things out for yourself, and Yelp reviews are not trustworthy.

00:32:48.098 --> 00:32:56.558
I mean, they might be, they might not be, but do you really want to spend the day figuring that out when you're in this beautiful country?

00:32:57.267 --> 00:32:58.825
Yeah, perfect, perfect.

00:32:58.825 --> 00:33:05.713
Now, is there anything that I should have asked you and I didn't, or if there's anything that you would like to share with the audience, please.

00:33:06.724 --> 00:33:13.999
I would say for the audience if you're thinking about traveling, say you're in the US and you're thinking about going to Europe.

00:33:13.999 --> 00:33:17.654
What I've told my friends is people I know go to Morocco before you go to Europe.

00:33:17.654 --> 00:33:20.693
I really I really think so.

00:33:20.924 --> 00:33:33.820
I mean just all of the different landscapes, the architecture you get some of the European feel in parts of Morocco and you're just never going to see these things in Europe.

00:33:33.820 --> 00:33:37.846
Everywhere you look, it's just amazing, and for different reasons.

00:33:37.846 --> 00:33:42.874
You know, desert city, old city, seaside, tanger that would be.

00:33:42.874 --> 00:33:46.539
My advice to people is go to Morocco before you go to Europe.

00:33:46.925 --> 00:33:47.448
I love it.

00:33:47.448 --> 00:33:48.131
I love it.

00:33:48.131 --> 00:33:52.955
So the tour that you have done, or the itinerary, is the north side of Morocco.

00:33:52.955 --> 00:33:56.013
The south side of Morocco is a little bit different.

00:33:56.013 --> 00:34:00.556
It's a little bit more going back in time and it's completely different experience.

00:34:00.556 --> 00:34:10.550
So if you have a chance to come back to Morocco, that's what I would advise doing the south side of Morocco, because the north side you have done it, and also in terms of price.

00:34:10.550 --> 00:34:13.914
So a lot of people that way they know the reals are expensive.

00:34:13.914 --> 00:34:16.132
They are more expensive than the hotels.

00:34:16.132 --> 00:34:23.958
When you do a south side tour is not as expensive as the north side because of the accommodations.

00:34:23.958 --> 00:34:27.411
In fast it could be easily over a hundred dollars a day.

00:34:28.074 --> 00:34:35.634
In the south side it's probably half of it, or just a little bit over half of it, and you get to experience quite a bit of things as well.

00:34:35.634 --> 00:34:37.849
It includes the desert, they include what is that?

00:34:37.849 --> 00:34:41.655
Where the Atlas Studios are called Hollywood of Morocco.

00:34:41.655 --> 00:34:46.597
And then you have you go to Ibn Hattu, which is what a lot of movies and series have been filmed.

00:34:46.597 --> 00:34:47.728
As of today.

00:34:47.728 --> 00:34:51.125
They are talking there's a British producer, I think he's in Ibn Hattu.

00:34:51.125 --> 00:35:02.378
They are talking about making Gladiator number two, so they are in the process of it, and also the other series, the Witcher with Superman I forgot his name is filming in Morocco as well.

00:35:02.378 --> 00:35:03.605
I think they wrapped up that.

00:35:03.605 --> 00:35:09.565
So there's always something happening in the southern part of Morocco in terms of movies and series as well.

00:35:09.684 --> 00:35:17.436
So if you get a chance to come back to Morocco, we would love to host you again and we do appreciate you trusting us and giving us a chance to serve you.

00:35:17.436 --> 00:35:25.391
And it's kind of weird because when people tell me what you do and I tell them hey, I'm a servant, this is what I do, this is who I am and my team are the same we serve.

00:35:25.391 --> 00:35:29.936
We feel so good and we feel so proud when we serve, when we make a difference in someone's life.

00:35:29.936 --> 00:35:34.135
You know, because somebody else made a difference in my life and I'm just trying to do the same for somebody else.

00:35:34.135 --> 00:35:38.476
So, on behalf of my team, my family, we are very great for Rachel.

00:35:38.476 --> 00:35:46.259
We really really, really appreciate you taking a chance on us and giving us that opportunity to plan everything for you from A to Z.

00:35:46.259 --> 00:35:49.869
We're so glad you don't like to plan anything, so we did it for you.

00:35:50.186 --> 00:35:54.898
Well, I will be back and I appreciate everything that you guys did, thank you.

00:35:54.898 --> 00:36:00.077
There was not one time where I felt like I was being bothersome to you, ilya or Sam.

00:36:00.077 --> 00:36:06.597
You know we're always willing and ready to help me and answer questions or make me feel better about something, and Absolutely.

00:36:06.597 --> 00:36:08.731
I mean, I cried when I was leaving.

00:36:09.885 --> 00:36:14.164
You know here's the funny part, Rachel I swear to you we had Daniel and Sierra.

00:36:14.164 --> 00:36:19.936
They traveled as a couple, I think then traveled over 60 countries, and the conversation that I've had with him is incredible.

00:36:19.936 --> 00:36:28.592
And I know for a fact that the hardest part about your tour is always saying goodbye, Always thinking of those people Some you may see again, some you may not see again.

00:36:28.592 --> 00:36:35.592
And then a year goes by, two years go by, and then you go back to your trip and you think about it and it's like, oh, I wonder what that person is doing.

00:36:35.592 --> 00:36:42.117
So that's why when I look at your Instagram pictures, those pictures they tell a different story, amazing story.

00:36:42.117 --> 00:36:44.693
It was just beautifully documented.

00:36:44.693 --> 00:36:49.108
And those pictures they'll have value when time goes by, Six months from now.

00:36:49.108 --> 00:36:59.335
You look at them and it's like, oh my God, I can't believe I went to that place, and whether it's Tangier, Shifshia or Marrakesh, that's the beauty of it and we're so glad that we were part of that journey for you, Rachel.

00:36:59.704 --> 00:37:03.952
Yes, I'm thankful and I just love you guys and I hope to travel with you again.

00:37:04.286 --> 00:37:04.909
Thank you so much.
